Women have been landscaping their pubic areas since the days of the ancient Egyptians. Egyptian hieroglyphs tell us that women would remove their pubes using a variety of methods, like shaving or sugaring, which was essentially old-school waxing. In Rome, women would pluck or shave their naughty bits to neaten up the area and make it look more attractive. So basically, women have been finding ways to neaten up their pubic region since the beginning of recorded history, and they never really stopped.
Today, women have taken landscaping one step further, and they actually style their hair now. Whether they wax, shave, trim, or stick with a neat bush, some women spend almost as much time styling their vaginas as they do with their heads.
If you’re just now thinking about hopping on this trend but have no idea where to start, here are a few of the trendiest lawn maintenance styles to get you going!
Waxing Styles
If you want to go bare, then waxing is one of the most high-maintenance options, but the soft, smooth skin may be worth the effort. Especially since it also means fewer ingrown hairs and no razors near your lips. Of course, you’ll need to wax for this look, which means growing out your hair a bit first.
For complete bareness from the front to the back, you’ll want The Hollywood. I won’t lie, the first few times are fairly painful, but the result is a wonderfully smooth nether region that lasts longer than shaving. This is popular for both men and women, and for good reason!
The Brazilian may be a better option if you don’t want to do the fully hairless look. The Brazilian Wax is a trendy classic and well known in every waxing salon, so you won’t need to explain what you want outside the name. This is still waxing almost the entire front area but with a thin strip of hair left in the front.
Next is The French. Like The Brazilian, it removes a lot of the hair by waxing, leaving the bottom and back alone. The line in the front is shaped like an upside-down triangle, leaving a wider strip than The Brazilian. The French is the perfect style for anyone who wants to look trendy but is new to waxing and wants to get used to the sensation before committing to fully bald.
The Landing Strip is another classic look that has survived the test of time. Playboy models made this popular, so it may be your perfect style if you want a cute and playful look. The Landing Strip is basically a half-inch strip that goes from the top of your hairline to the top of the labia as a guide to the fun bits.
Finally, the most basic waxing style that’s a frequent go-to is the Bikini Wax. As the name implies, only the areas outside of the bikini bottom coverage area are waxed. The rest is then trimmed to maintain a neat appearance. This is the least painful waxing job since you aren’t getting too close to the labia and the nerves in that area.
Shaving and Trimming
While shaving is far easier and less painful than waxing, it doesn’t last as long and is notorious for causing ingrown hairs. Shaving can still look neat and clean, though, so it’s a great option if you plan on someone seeing your hoo-ha in the very near future. For any shaving style, make sure you wet the hair to soften it and exfoliate the skin so the hair stands up and you don’t miss a spot. Also, use a new, clean razor to avoid infection or irritation from possible knicks or cuts. Finally, apply shaving cream or gel, shave in the direction of the hair growth to prevent ingrown hairs later, then moisturize to prevent dry skin. There’s nothing sexy about a dry cooch!
The Five O’Clock Shadow is the easiest shaving or trimming style and looks exactly like it does on beards, just a little further south. This style is not a close shave and looks like it grew for a day or so after shaving. This is a great shaving or trimming style to avoid ingrown hairs, but it’s not the most popular since rubbing or friction on the frontal area can be scratchy.
The Clean Shaven looks exactly how it sounds. This is just like The Hollywood or The Brazilian but using a clean razor instead of wax. This will give you the clean and bare look that waxing gives you, but without the long-term commitment and maintenance.
The Classic Trim is just as easy as shaving without getting too close to the skin. This is the perfect look for anyone who wants to “neaten up” their appearance without looking too bare. Trimming involves a good pair of hair trimming scissors and possibly a mirror to reach those hard-to-see areas.
Making shapes and designs in your pubic hair is also popular. There are infinite possibilities for shaped designs, whether a triangle or a popular mouse silhouette! Of course, for any design, you want to trim the hair first, so it’s more manageable. Next, create and use a stencil and apply your shaving cream around the desired area. A razor is good for the larger areas for the actual shaving, but a brow razor is best for creating neat and clear lines around your design. Obviously, make sure everything is clean and disinfected to avoid irritation.
Bushes and Baubles
Whether you prefer a full bush or want to be more daring and rebellious, there are a few other popular styles that don’t fit into any other category. These styles are either low or high maintenance, with nothing in between.
The Full Bush is the only style you’ll find with no maintenance required and is the easiest to upkeep. This style is not super common since it looks wild in a bikini, but this can be the perfect go-to look for the right person. The best part is that there are no razor bumps, waxing pain, or hair clean-up.
The Silver Fox is a newer trend where people with graying hair decide that the downstairs should match the upstairs. Occasionally you’ll find the younger crowd with silvery gray or white hair, and they’ll choose to make all their body hair match this look, but it’s more common among the middle-aged.
Dyed pubic hair has become popular among young and rebellious individuals. If you’re a bright, outgoing, extreme type of person, you may be the type that can pull off the purple, green, or blue carpeting.
The Punk Rocker is taking the dyed look to an extreme. Since this requires a lot of maintenance, it’s not a common style, but some younger and rebellious types will dye their pubic hair and style it using gel or mousse for special occasions. If you choose to try this, make sure the products you use are safe for sensitive skin!
Some would say Vajazzling is the most extreme style, though more with the crowd born in the 1980s to 1990s. Vajazzle means to attach rhinestones or other gems to the pubic area to add decoration. Some people even apply temporary or permanent tattoos to dress up their downstairs. This style is not as common among younger people now, but about ten years ago, this was so common that people could hire someone to come to their house and Vajazzle them.
Whether you choose to shave, wax, trim, or grow it out, there’s no wrong way to style your downstairs hair. So dare to get out (or down) there and try something new!
