Working from home has its perks, especially if you’re not a fan of wearing pants while you get caught up on your emails. So, it comes as no surprise that someone came up with a whole day to celebrate working in the buff.
Working Naked Day, which falls on the first Friday in February, was founded by author Lisa Kanarek in 2010 when she left the corporate world to work from home. The concept of working naked doesn’t necessarily mean working nude. It can also mean working in a space that is stripped down from the confines of a corporate office. We all know that’s not what people are thinking about, though.
The easiest way to celebrate the day is to get naked while you work, which is a lot easier this year, given that many people are still working from home. So, don’t be afraid to take it all off, as long as you remember to put it back on for any Zoom meetings you may need to take during the day. Unless you work for onebestway, a UK design firm that experimented with Naked Fridays in 2009 and documented it for a TV show. Yep, this also is a real thing.
If you do decide to go commando today, naturist (another term for ‘nudist’) Stephane Deschenes recommends sitting on a towel to protect your fancy office chair from sweat and other fluids. He also advises those working naked from home to remember to throw something on before answering the door, lest you want the UPS guy to get an unexpected glimpse of the goods.
So, just how many people celebrate this day, or any other day, really, by taking it all off while they work from home? An informal survey of Adult FriendFinder members indicated that 42% of respondents said they would commemorate the occasion by working naked the whole day. 26% of respondents said they work naked every day anyway, and 31.6% said they can’t work naked from home due to factors like roommates or frequent video calls.
Benefits of Working Naked
An informal survey of, uh, myself indicated that people tend to be more productive while working naked. If you happen to be close enough to a window to get some sunlight, or if you’re working in your backyard, it can also help support your immune system by helping you get the vitamin D you need to prevent illnesses. Just be sure you’re out of your neighbor’s view, as I’m not sure the police will accept “I was trying to work on my immune system” as an excuse for indecent exposure. This one may be obvious, but it’s also easier to knock out a quickie or two in between work calls if you’re already birthday suited up. Don’t forget the chair towel if you’re trying this one, though!
Jobs You Can Do While Naked
If you wish you could work naked but don’t have the sort of career that supports those goals, maybe it’s time for a switch! Webcam models and adult content creators get paid to be naked in their rooms, so if you’re not shy about sex, that may be something worth exploring. If you’re not nearly as bold but still like the idea of working in your birthday suit, freelance work could be the way to go because you get all the benefits of working naked without having to worry about putting on a shirt because your boss wants you to jump into a work call.
Any way you shake it (ha!), it’s time to get naked and get some work done!
